Hands-On Training
Hands-on training is an ongoing activity available to all researchers using the Kirby Center Facility.   Training is conducted through the Center's technical staff and collaborating advisors.  A full time MR technologist is on staff to provide expert training on the Philips Gyroscan ACS-NT MR System.  In addition, staff experienced in functional imaging methodologies are available on-site to train and advise research personnel in all aspects of planning and implementation of the functional imaging studies, as well as data transfer and analysis.  Focus is placed on the four core technologies, Quantitative Functional MRI, Brain Chemistry by MR Spectroscopy,  Identification/Characterization of Brain Connections, and Algorithmic Methods for Anatomical Brain Analysis (see resource technologies)

Training Grants and Awards

The center provides educational support for the many training grants and career development awards at area institutions.  Currently, this includes grant awardees from Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland.

NIH/NINDS - Cortical and Subcortical Brain Mechanisms Underlying AHDH
Kennedy Krieger Research Institute, Department of Neurogenetics
Principal Investigator: Stewart H. Mostofsky
This is a three year plan to develop the candidate into an independent investigator in the area of developmental behavioral neurology and includes a research study of the subcortical and cortical brain mechanisms that may underlie behaviors observed in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

NIH/NIMH -  Training in Perceptual and Cognitive Neuroscience
Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Department of Psychology
Principal Investigator: Howard Egeth
This is a graduate and postdoctoral training program in which Dr. Yantis is a Core Facility Member.

NIH/NIMH - Research Training Components
University of Maryland, Baltimore, Department of Psychiatry
Principal Investigator: Adrienne Lahti
To train young physicians in doing research with psychiatric patients.

NIH/NIMH - Research Track Residency Training Component
University of Maryland, Baltimore, Department of Psychiatry
Principal Investigator: Gunvant K. Thaker
The major goals of this project is to recruit talented medical graduates into the Residency Research Track Program and provide extensive research training during the course of the extended residency training.

Past Events
Gyroscan-NT Pulse Programming Course
This event was hosted by the Kirby Center, and sponsored by Philips Medical Systems.  Ten attendees received instruction in advanced pulse programming on the Philips Scanner from experts from Philips Medical Systems, the Netherlands. (September, 1999)

"How To Do fMRI": Minisymposium & Tutorial
This event was hosted by the Kirby Center, and sponsored by the Kennedy Krieger Institute.  Thirty-five people attended a series of lectures on functional MRI physics, paradigm design, and data analysis.  Discussion panels were included to further consider issues related to paradigm. design and analysis. (August 26, 1999)
